New Years in Buenos Aires

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008
Just like Christmas, the city shuts down almost completely starting the evening before the New Year, until the night after New Years day.  I JUST got invited to a pretty nice little house party in Palermo, and I'm going to get some wine and dessert before the stores close at 6 pm.  Perhaps afterwards we'll head to La Viruta, which is a bit of a mess if you're expecting quality dancing, since it's 20 percent tango danced poorly, and the rest party music.   Looking at the New Year, I feel like it's an arbitrary date, excepting that it relates to the earth's position relative to the sun, and other people care about it.  Still, it's a fine time… Read More

Buenos Aires Scene

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008
I've been enjoying random boutique ice cream shops in Buenos Aires a bit too much I think.  Last night, I had Baileys and Dulce de Leche flavors, after dancing at Villa Malcolm, before Salon Canning.  Late in the evening, if a shop wants to have customers come in but still be secure, they go through a small opening in the gate.  On my way out, I slammed my leg pretty hard into the gate, but after some ice and ibuprofen, everything worked out.   There's a certain foreigner / professional dancer tango circuit, and I'm definitely in the thick of it. Villa Malcolm has performances quite often, and a lot of "nuevo" tango, which native argentines… Read More

Buenos Aires Tango Scene Shenanigans

Sunday, December 28th, 2008
Coincedence watch 2008: I ran into a group of cool greek kids at Tango Brujo, quite possibly my favorite shop in Buenos Aires.  It's like Hogwarts in Harry Potter (Brujo means witch, incidentally). We walked around, looking for crazy ice cream.  I eventually got scoops of kinotos al whisky, marscapone, and strudel. Here are some pics:   [caption id="attachment_26" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Walking with the greeks after Tango Brujo"]Walking with the greeks after Tango BrujoRead More

Dance coincedences

Saturday, December 27th, 2008
Enough already, just ... stop, my brain can't take it any more. Coincedence watch 2008: I was at La Viruta last night, where I met a girl who has this in common with me:
  • Tall
  • Jewish
  • Lives within half a block of Medrano and Humahuaca
I hit Salon Canning, and then went to La Viruta around 4:30 in the morning.  After hanging out there for an hour, things wound down, me and some new friends hit the nearby gas station for some pretty decent coffe and media lunas.  I met El Gato, violinist of El Afronte, as well as Paola, who teaches at Viruta and performs a bunch.  The pace is picking up. Buenos Aires is a small town

Friday, December 26th, 2008
Coincedence watch 2008:
  • I live one block away from Eugenia Parilla, one of the best tango teachers and dancers on earth
  • I live 4 blocks from my friend Anne-sophit, which I found out yesterday dancing at Niño Bien
  • I live two blocks away from a special vietnamese dinner that'll be happening Sunday, hosted by Thuy of A Little Saigon, the only vietnamese restaurant in Buenos Aires
Yesterday was great, I came feeling mediocre due to travel, and was happy when I got four good dances in. Little did I know that things were just… Read More

Mi Buenos Aires Querido

Thursday, December 25th, 2008
I'm back in a summer wonderland of Buenos Aires for the 4th time in 4 years.  I wasn't sure I'd make it today, since I left my passport at home with an hour and a half until boarding when I left the airport.  Bear in mind that this is the middle of Seattle's winter of discontent, from what I hear it hasn't been this snowy or this cold in Seattle since 1990, or possibly earlier.  Apparently, we don't deal with snow very well. Fortunately my cab driver had a muscle car as far as cabs go, and gunned the… Read More
